While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, recent developments within the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp hint that Ravichandran Ashwin – one of India’s finest match-winners in red-ball cricket could be on his way out of the franchise.
The exact reason behind this potential separation remains unclear. However, sources suggest that the veteran off-spinner has made up his mind and may have already communicated his decision to the management.
Whether this move is linked to CSK’s long-term plans is not certain, but it’s worth noting that, as reported by Cricbuzz, top CSK officials and players – including current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and former captain MS Dhoni have been holding meetings in Chennai over the past few days, likely to discuss the upcoming season.
Is it related to the Trade Window?
With the IPL trade window currently open, speculation is growing that this could be the perfect time for a move. Whether Ashwin will be traded to another franchise or thrown into the auction remains one of the biggest talking points in the league right now.
One key indicator of the possible split is Ashwin’s expected resignation as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy, a role he has held for the past year. Should he join another franchise, continuing in that position could create a conflict of interest – something Ashwin is reportedly keen to avoid.
Statistically, Ashwin’s IPL credentials are impressive – 221 matches, 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.29, and 833 runs at a strike rate of 118. Unsurprisingly, if he becomes available, several franchises will line up for his services. In the 2025 season, he featured in nine games for CSK.
Ashwin rejoined Chennai last season after a nine-year gap, with CSK paying Rs 9.75 crore for his services. Between 2016 and 2024, he represented Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. His IPL career began with CSK in 2008, making his debut the following year, and he spent his first eight seasons (2008–2015) under MS Dhoni’s leadership.
This news comes just a day after reports surfaced about Sanju Samson requesting Rajasthan Royals to release him – another potential shake-up in the IPL player market.
