The race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has taken an exciting turn for Indian sports fans. On Wednesday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officially approved the country’s bid during a Special General Meeting (SGM), paving the way for Ahmedabad to potentially welcome athletes from across the Commonwealth.

The decision comes after months of groundwork, including the submission of an Expression of Interest to host the event. With the final bid deadline set for August 31, India now faces the crucial task of detailing its vision, infrastructure plans, and financial readiness.

A Boost from Canada’s Exit
India’s chances have received a major lift following Canada’s withdrawal from the race, leaving the field less crowded. According to PTI, a team from Commonwealth Sport, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently toured Ahmedabad to inspect venues and engage with Gujarat government officials. Their visit suggests serious consideration of India’s capabilities.
Later this month, a larger delegation from Commonwealth Sport is expected to arrive, signalling deeper discussions and possible collaboration. The ultimate decision will be made in late November, when the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport meets in Glasgow.
A Second Date with the Games?
India has hosted the Commonwealth Games once before the 2010 edition in Delhi, which remains one of the most ambitious multi-sport events ever staged in the country. Ahmedabad’s potential role as host for 2030 could mark a new chapter, both in terms of scale and global perception.
Earlier this year, the IOA had written to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) expressing interest in staging the event. However, one of India’s proposals to reinstate certain sports removed from the 2026 Games in order to protect its medal prospects was turned down by the CGF.
Commonwealth Games Struggling for Stability
In recent years, the Commonwealth Games have battled uncertainty. The 2026 edition was thrown into disarray when original hosts Victoria, Australia, pulled out due to escalating costs. Glasgow stepped in at the eleventh hour, but only in a stripped-down format, featuring ten sports across four venues.
This backdrop could work in India’s favour. With global sporting events increasingly challenged by financial and logistical hurdles, a committed bidder like India with government backing, existing facilities, and a growing sports economy might be exactly what the CGF is looking for.
The Road Ahead
Between now and the end of August, India must present a detailed bid that satisfies both sporting and financial expectations. If successful, the Games could offer a massive boost to the country’s sporting infrastructure, tourism, and global profile much like the 2010 edition did, albeit with lessons learned.
For now, Ahmedabad waits in the wings, as India positions itself to host the Commonwealth once more. The next few months will decide whether the dream of 2030 becomes a defining moment for Indian sport.
