There has been a lot of talk regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s playing in ODI World Cup 2027 following which former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has emphasised on the importance of both the legends in the ODI squad. Raina highlighted that their experience can help groom the youngsters and the next generation of leaders.
The long-term future of the two icons still remains uncertain as the duo have already stepped away from two formats – Test and T20. They last played Champions Trophy 2025 which was held in the ODI format in March, since then neither have featured in an international fixture.
Suresh Raina also believes that their presence in the 50-over format is invaluable and very crucial in mentoring young players. With Asia Cup in the T20I format just around the corner, the speculation is building that both Rohit and Kohli are likely to make an international return during India’s tour of Australia later this year.
“Rohit and Virat’s experience is very important It’s crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit,” Raina told Telecom Asia Sport.
“They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room,” he added.
Recently both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made it clear that they are aiming to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. But their fitness and spot in the squad will be monitored by the BCCI.
