Alexander Zverev Knocked Out After Shocking Defeat Against Felix Auger Aliassime News24 –

Third seed Alexander Zverev has been eliminated from the US Open as he lost the third round to Canada’s 25th seed Felix-Auger-Aliassime on Saturday. The German has been the runner-up in US Open 2020 and he even started strong by taking the first set as he extended his lead with a set point in the second. But Auger-Aliassime remained calm and held his nerve during the tense tie-break and turned the match around in his favour as he secured a 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes.

“This feels good. I’ve been coming here since 2018. I’m still young, it’s been a few years but I’m working my way,” Felix-Auger-Aliassime mentioned after the win.

“The tournament’s still going, the job’s not done but this means a lot to me.”

The loss is a major disappointment for Zverev, who had been going to the second week at Flushing Meadows every year since 2018. It also comes on the heels of his poor showing in Wimbledon last month, when he lost in the first round his earliest exit from a Grand Slam in six years.

For Auger-Aliassime, the victory is a potent statement as he pursues his first Grand Slam championship. The best that Auger-Aliassime had done at a major was reaching the semi-finals in 2021 when he was in New York. Now, he will get ready for a fourth-round encounter with 15th-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev on Monday, which is a high-stakes affair.
