Time for Rohit & Kohli to Follow MS Dhoni’s Path? Varun Aaron Gives Reality Check News24 –

There was only one major reason for fans to be excited about the India vs Australia ODI series opener, the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. After an eight-month break, the two modern-day legends were back in blue, having last featured in India’s inspiring victory in the Champions Trophy final.

With both no longer part of India’s Test or T20I plans, their return to ODI cricket was seen as a fresh start. But unfortunately, it turned out to be a night to forget for the duo and their fans.

Rohit and Kohli’s Return Flops

In the high-profile comeback match, Rohit fell for just 8 runs, while Kohli was dismissed for a duck. The early exits left India wobbling, and also raised serious questions about their form and match readiness.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already raised concerns about their lack of match practice, urging both players to consider playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to regain rhythm. The opening ODI performance only confirmed those fears – the pair looked rusty and out of touch.

“Learn from Dhoni,” says Varun Aaron

Former India pacer Varun Aaron didn’t hold back in his analysis. Speaking on Star Sports, he called on the senior duo to take a page out of MS Dhoni’s playbook.

“Play domestic cricket. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy starts in November and then the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December. That’s the best way to be in touch with the game,” Aaron said.

He reminded viewers that Dhoni, even after retiring from Tests, continued playing for Jharkhand in tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, keeping himself match-fit and sharp in the lead-up to major white-ball tournaments.

Domestic Form Worries Continue

In 2025, both Rohit and Kohli made just one appearance each in domestic cricket – Rohit for Mumbai, Kohli for Delhi. Both matches ended in disappointment, with neither making any significant contribution. Since then, they haven’t featured in the domestic circuit.

With India eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup, the selectors are clearly laying down the message: no match practice, no selection.
