What happened to Shreyas Iyer? All you need to know about his life-threatening injury in Sydney


India’s star batter and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered a severe injury in the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The injury not just turned out to be serious but also life-threatening following which his family and friends rushed to Sydney. Here’s a timeline of what happened to Iyer and how the series of events unfolded.

Injury setback for Shreyas Iyer in 3rd ODI

Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury after he caught a catch to dismiss Alex Carey while Harshit Rana was bowling in the third ODI against Australia. As soon as Iyer fell on the ground he was visibly in pain and he was immediately taken back to the dressing room.

Iyer collapses in dressing room

According to the PTI, it has been reported that Shreyas Iyer collapsed in the dressing room and the parameters of his vitals also dropped significantly. Earlier, it was mentioned that it was an injury to the left rib but situation worsened.

Medical scans reveal internal bleeding

The medical scans revealed that there was an internal bleeding and he was immediately admitted in the ICU. According to PTI, his recover will take time and there is no definite timeline about his return to competitive cricket.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source said to BCCI.

BCCI gives a medical update

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

Suryakumar Yadav gives an update

Following this severe injury, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav provided an update about Iyer’s health and explained that initially he didn’t have phone but once his condition stabilized he has been replying and recovering.

“We spoke to him,” Surya told reporters on Tuesday. “When we got to know about his injury, I called him. Then I realised that Shreyas doesn’t have his phone on him, and I called our physio Kamlesh Jain, who told us that he’s stable.”

“Doctors are there with him; it’s looking good. Everything is normal, but he will be kept under observation for a few days. He’s been talking to everyone, so it’s good,” he said.

When will Iyer return to competitive cricket?

Shreyas Iyer’s return is still not specified and his recovery will be taking time since the injury was extremely serious. Recently, he was announced as the vice-captain of India in ODI format and now the Men in Blue will be playing ODI against South Africa which will be starting from November 30. Now there is a big question mark over his participation in the series and his return.
