A teenage cricketer from Melbourne is fighting for his life after being struck by a ball before a local T20 match. The shocking incident took place on Tuesday evening at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully, leaving the cricket community in deep distress.
The 17-year-old boy was reportedly warming up in the nets when he was hit by a ball. Emergency services responded quickly, with Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance and Advanced Life paramedics rushing to the scene. The young player was taken to Monash Medical Centre in a critical condition, where he remains on life support. His family is by his side as doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.
Michael Finn, president of the Ringwood and District Cricket Association, expressed deep concern and support for everyone affected. “Currently, our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Finn told 7News. “We’re committed to providing whatever support is needed for the clubs and officials involved.”
A witness told the Herald Sun that the situation turned serious very quickly. “Someone ran and grabbed a defib, and an ambulance was there within maybe five or six minutes,” the witness said. “Then there were fire brigade and police flying in left, right, and centre. Everyone was just stunned. At first, we thought someone had just been hit in the head, but when they called for the defibrillator, we knew it was much more serious.”
Players from both teams were visibly shaken, many of whom personally knew the teenager. The local cricket community has rallied around the player’s family, offering messages of support and prayers for his recovery.
This tragic accident has drawn painful comparisons to the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes in 2014, who was fatally struck in the neck during a Sheffield Shield match. Australian team doctor Peter Brukner had then described Hughes’s condition as “incredibly rare,” emphasizing that such incidents are almost unheard of in cricket.
As the young player continues his fight in hospital, the wider cricket world stands united in hope and prayer, wishing for his recovery and strength for his family during this heartbreaking time.
