Karun Nair’s cryptic tweet after India’s collapse gets reaction from R Ashwin

Indian batter Karun Nair, who has been away from the national team since the England tour in August, created a buzz on Monday with a cryptic social media post. His message came at a time when India were battling on the field against South Africa in the second Test in Guwahati, prompting fans to link both situations.

Karun Nair’s Cryptic Tweet

“Some conditions carry a feel you know by heart and the silence of not being out there adds its own sting.”

The timing led to speculation that the 32-year-old batter was hinting at his absence from the Indian squad during a difficult Test series.

R Ashwin Reacts

A Career of Highs and Frustration

Karun Nair’s Test career has often been described as stop-start. His biggest moment remains the triple century against England in 2016, which made him only the second Indian to achieve the feat. But after that, chances in the national team became rare.

Despite this, Karun has enjoyed strong success in domestic cricket. His recent performances have been encouraging, especially after playing a major role in Vidarbha’s Ranji Trophy title win last season.

However, his overseas form during the England tour did not help his case. He managed 205 runs in eight innings, averaging 25.62, with only one half-century. Those numbers were not enough to convince the selectors for the West Indies series or the India A games against South Africa A.

Harsha Bhogle Backs Nair for Test Return

Before the Guwahati Test began, India were hit by the news that Shubman Gill would miss the match due to a neck injury. This opened up a debate about who could replace him.

Commentator Harsha Bhogle, in a post on X, included Karun Nair at the top of his preference list. Bhogle felt India needed a right-handed batter in the middle order and believed Nair’s strong domestic form made him a suitable option.

Bhogle wrote:
“My inclination, for a one-off Test, would be to pick a player in top form, someone like Karun Nair. India don’t play again till July/Aug, so this would be a horses-for-courses decision.”

Nair Opens Up About Disappointment

Karun recently admitted he felt disappointed after not being selected despite strong domestic performances.

“After the last two years I’ve had, I think I deserved a lot better. More than a series,” he said. He mentioned that some Indian team members had spoken to him about his performances, which helped him stay motivated.

But he added that, at the end of the day, his focus remains simple: “To score runs and let people have their opinions.”
