Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman breaks silence after being removed by KKR from IPL 2026, says ‘if you are….’
Just months before the start of the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have suffered a major setback after releasing Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. The decision was not initiated by the franchise but was taken following clear instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Mustafizur’s participation in the upcoming IPL had been under scrutiny for several weeks, with controversy building off the field. As the situation escalated, the BCCI stepped in and asked KKR to part ways with the Bangladeshi pacer ahead of the new season.
Mustafizur Rahman Reacts After Being Released
Following his release, Mustafizur Rahman shared his reaction in an interview with Bangladeshi cricket website BDcricTime. The left-arm pacer expressed disappointment but appeared resigned to the situation.
“If you are removed from the team, what else can you do?” Mustafizur said, summing up his feelings in a brief but emotional response.
KKR had picked Mustafizur during the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in December 2025 for a hefty sum of Rs 9.20 crore. The signing initially generated excitement among fans due to his experience and skill in T20 cricket, but the focus soon shifted away from cricketing matters.
Political and Social Opposition Fuels Controversy
Soon after Mustafizur’s signing, several political and social groups raised objections to the presence of a Bangladeshi player in the IPL. The opposition gained momentum following recent violent incidents in Bangladesh and growing concerns over the safety of minorities in the country.
The controversy intensified when BJP leader Kaustav Bagchi publicly objected to Bangladeshi players participating in IPL matches held in Kolkata. This sparked wider debate and led to criticism involving KKR’s co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, drawing the franchise into an uncomfortable political spotlight.
Why BCCI Took the Call?
While the BCCI did not officially cite political reasons, the board made it clear that the decision was taken as a precautionary step. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, speaking to India Today, explained the board’s position.
“Considering the current situation in the country and the surrounding region, the BCCI directed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh player Mustafizur Rahman,” Saikia said. He added that the move was made keeping IPL 2026 preparations and overall security concerns in mind.
KKR Issues Official Statement
KKR later released an official statement confirming the development. The franchise said it had acted in accordance with BCCI and IPL management instructions.
“Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that the BCCI and IPL management have directed the franchise to release Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the upcoming IPL season. The decision has been taken following all necessary procedures. As per rules, the BCCI will allow KKR to sign a replacement player, details of which will be shared in due course,” the statement read.
With Mustafizur’s exit confirmed, KKR will now look to identify a suitable replacement as they continue preparations for IPL 2026.
