Who is Mohammed Kaif? Mohammed Shami’s brother summoned by…, he plays for….

It’s not every day you see a world-class speedster being called up by the Election Commission of India (ECI), but that’s exactly the “bouncer” Mohammed Shami and his brother Mohammed Kaif are currently ducking.

While Shami is usually busy hitting the top of off-stump, he’s now dealing with a bit of a paperwork tangle back in Kolkata. The ECI has issued notices to the duo as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a massive cleanup of voter lists aimed at ensuring everything is 100% accurate before the next big elections.

The Hearing vs The Vijay Hazare Trophy

Shami was originally supposed to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) at a school in Jadavpur, South Kolkata, on January 5, 2026. However, cricket waits for no one.

Shami wrote to the poll body explaining that he’s currently in Rajkot, leading the charge for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Being a pro, he couldn’t exactly abandon his teammates mid-tournament. The ECI has been understanding, pushing his hearing back to a window between January 9 and 11.

Who is the “Other” Mohammed Kaif?

No, we’re not talking about the legendary fielder from the 2002 NatWest final. Shami’s younger brother, Mohammed Kaif, is a rising talent in his own right. He’s a right-arm medium-fast bowler and a handy right-handed batter. Just like his big brother, Kaif represents Bengal in domestic cricket.

Why the Notices?

The ECI flagged some “logical discrepancies” in the brothers’ enumeration forms. Specifically, it involves things like progeny mapping (linking parents to children on the rolls) and self-mapping to older records (like the 2002 voter list).

While Shami was born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, he’s been a permanent resident of Kolkata for years. He’s registered as a voter in Ward No. 93 under the Rashbehari constituency. These hearings are basically a “spot check” to make sure famous faces and everyday citizens alike are correctly documented.

A Larger Political Storm

This isn’t just about Shami. The whole SIR process in West Bengal has become a bit of a political lightning rod. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns about how the revision is being handled, alleging that instructions are being sent via WhatsApp rather than formal orders, which could lead to genuine voters being left out.

From the ECI’s perspective, summoning high-profile figures like Shami (and even TMC MP Dev, who received a similar notice) shows they’re being thorough. Whether you’re a superstar pacer or a local shopkeeper, the rules for the ballot box stay the same.
