WPL 2026: Gujarat Giants suffer big setback as star India player gets ruled out due to injury

Gujarat Giants have suffered a big blow before the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League, as wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the entire tournament. Yastika Bhatia will not be able to play the tournament due to a knee injury and was purchased for INR 50 lakhs at an auction by the Gujarat Giants franchise at the age of 25 years.

Interestingly, Yastika was already ruled out even before the auctioning process began. Yastika has been suffering from the same injury that kept her away from the Indian tour to Australia as well as the ODI World Cup, with Uma Chhetri making way as her substitute in the international setup. However, Yastika was unable to recover in time within the stipulated time frame so as to be eligible to play in the WPL competition.

According to the existing rules of the replacement of players for the BCCI, the Gujarat Giants won’t be able to sign a new replacement since the injury occurred before the auction. Additionally, other teams could be affected by the same rule, since Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Pooja Vastrakar and UP Warriors’ Pratika Rawal could be faced with the same situation.

Gujarat Giants released an emotional message on their social media handle and assured that they will unite for in the next season.

While Yastika’s absence leaves a noticeable gap, it also opens the door for other players to step up and make an impact.
