India’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history on Saturday 17th January by becoming the first cricketer ever to score a half-century in a U19 World Cup match before turning 15 in age. The left-handed opener was playing in India’s second Group A match of the U19 World Cup 2026 against Bangladesh at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. At just 14 years and 296 days old, he scored 72 runs off 67 balls.

How was Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s innings?

While at the crease, the Rajasthan Royals player hit 6 fours and 3 sixes for the Ayush Mhatre-led team. He also partnered with Abhigyan Kundu to add 62 runs off 99 balls for the fourth wicket.

Vaibhav was dismissed by Iqbal Hossain Emon on the second ball of the 27th over of India’s innings. Al Fahad took the catch when Suryavanshi tried to hit a big shot. Vaibhav took only 30 balls on Saturday to score his half-century. He reached the fifty by taking a single on the last ball of the 13th over.

When Vaibhav Suryavanshi couldn’t make an impact with the bat in the tournament?

In India’s opening Group A match of the U19 World Cup 2026 against the United States on Thursday January 15th, Vaibhav Suryavanshi could not make an impact with the bat. He opened the innings with Ayush Mhatre while chasing 108 runs at Queens Sports Club but scored only 2 runs off 4 balls.

In the rain-affected match that India won by six wickets, Sooryavanshi was dismissed by Ritvik Appidi on the second ball of the third over during the chase.

What more records did Vaibhav Suryavanshi break?

However, despite his poor outing with the bat in that game, he made history by becoming the youngest player to feature in a U19 World Cup match at the age of 14 years and 294 days. He went past the previous record held by Canada batter Nitish Kumar. Nitish was 15 years and 245 days old when he made his U19 World Cup debut for Canada against Zimbabwe in Christchurch on January 15, 2010.

In the match against the USA, Vaibhav also took one wicket. He dismissed Nitish Sudini on the second ball of the 36th over of the USA’s innings. Sudini scored 36 runs off 52 balls while batting at number seven.
