The T20 World Cup 2026 is just weeks away, but the dispute between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over the venue is still unresolved. Bangladesh wants the ICC to move their matches from India to Sri Lanka due to security issues, but that’s nearly impossible now because of the short time left.
What is happening between the ICC and BCB?
While the ICC has downplayed security concerns in India, the BCB remains firm in their decision not to play the tournament there. Despite multiple discussions, the ICC and BCB have not been able to reach an agreement.
What has the BCB asked ICC?
According to reports, Bangladesh asked the ICC to switch their group with Ireland, which would move their matches from India to Sri Lanka. Ireland is in Group B, alongside Sri Lanka, Australia, Oman and Zimbabwe, and will play all their games in Sri Lanka. However, the ICC has reportedly told the Ireland Cricket Board that there will be no changes to their schedule.
“We’ve received definitive assurances that we won’t move from the original schedule. We’re definitely playing the Group Stage in Sri Lanka,” an official from CI told Cricbuzz in a statement.
When will the final decision come out?
The ICC is running short on time to persuade the BCB to play their matches in India. They have already received all security guarantees, and now it’s up to the BCB to decide whether to agree or refuse. With the tournament starting soon, a final decision is expected shortly.
What will the BCB do?
The BCB is likely to accept the decision, as the board is facing serious financial problems and cannot miss out on the large earnings from the T20 World Cup. Refusing to play could also lead to strict penalties from the ICC. So, unless the BCB is willing to take a big risk, it will probably ease its position and agree to play the T20 World Cup in India.
