After pulling out of T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh to lose Rs 280000000 due to….

A major development has rocked the cricket world ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh government has taken a firm stance regarding the tournament, which is being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and has flatly refused to send its team to India.

Citing security concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has cast doubt on its participation, not only jeopardizing their involvement in the tournament but also signaling potential major changes to the ICC’s plans. As of now, Bangladesh has officially walked out of the upcoming T20 World Cup or more accurately, been removed, after they remained steadfast in their refusal to travel to India for the competition.

Will Bangladesh withdraw from the World Cup?

The future of the Bangladesh cricket team hangs in the balance due to security concerns regarding playing in India. Following inconclusive discussions with the government, it has been made clear that the team will not travel to India. Bangladesh has requested the ICC to shift its matches to Sri Lanka, although this seems highly unlikely. The ICC has given the BCB a day to make a final decision. If Bangladesh maintains its stance, Scotland could replace them in the tournament based on rankings.

Financial Repercussions for Bangladesh Cricket According to the Indian news agency PTI, this withdrawal carries a heavy financial toll. If Bangladesh does not participate in this T20 World Cup, Bangladesh cricket stands to lose around $2.7 million (over Tk 3.30 billion). By participating, the board would have earned this amount as part of the ICC’s annual revenue share, which is calculated as 4.46% of the ICC’s total revenue. This loss represents a significant blow to the board’s developmental budget and international standing.

Historic Increase in Prize Money While the controversy over participation continues, the ICC has also delivered good news for players and teams. The total prize pool for the 2026 T20 World Cup has been increased by approximately 20 percent. While the total budget was $11.25 million in 2024, it has been increased to $13.5 million (approximately Rs 120.37 crore) for 2026. The team that becomes world champion will receive a hefty prize of $3 million (approximately Rs 26.74 crore).

New Budget for Various Stages of the World Cup

As per reports The ICC has increased financial assistance and rewards at every level of the tournament. The comparative breakdown of the new prize money is as follows:

Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup History and the Current Crisis

The Bangladesh cricket team has been a full member of the ICC and has participated in every edition since 2007. Their performance in 2024 was their best to date, as they finished in 7th place. Looking at their overall record, they have recorded 12 wins and 31 losses in 44 matches. However, despite qualifying for the 2026 tournament, the decision to withdraw due to security concerns would mark the first time in their long cricketing history that they have pulled out of a major tournament.

Hosts and Upcoming Challenges

This mega-event of 2026 is scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh’s willingness to play in Sri Lanka while refusing to play in India has become a diplomatic challenge for the ICC. If Bangladesh withdraws, it would be the first time in the tournament’s history that a qualified team has refused to play in another country due to security concerns. Currently, all eyes are on the final decision between the ICC and the Bangladesh government.
