How much will Bangladesh lose after exit from T20 World Cup?

Bangladesh will be missing the T20 Cricket World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. This has been reportedly confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) itself on Saturday after Bangladesh Cricket Board itself chose to deny India an opportunity to host Bangladesh in the world cup, scheduled for February 7 onward. While reports have pointed towards various cricket players of Bangladesh expressing willingness to play despite where exactly they were going to compete in, the decision has clearly come from the government without any proper opinion taken from them. This has placed Bangladesh cricket at a very critical moment with such an announcement made by ICC itself.

Financial Consequences of T20 WC exit

The withdrawal poses serious financial consequences to the BCB, to the extent that the country may lose between $300,000 to $500,000 (around 3.6 crore to 6.7 crore BDT) in participation fees for the group stage of the tournament itself.

Under the framework outlined in the ‘Member Participation Agreement’ document, ICC can impose fines up to $2 million, which is approximately 24 crores BDT, on that particular member country for non-participation when it is unjustified.

Big loss for Bangladesh

Reports also state that Bangladesh may lose up to $27 million (around 325-330 crore BDT) as the share of the 60% of the revenue made by the IPL board as they are being excluded from being entitled to their share of the revenue. Other reports are showing that the endorsement of players with brands like SG and SS, two of the largest Indian sports equipment brands, will also affect their off-field earnings.

Earlier, it was requested by the BCB that the ICC should shift Bangladesh’s cricket matches to Sri Lanka. This request was based on a feeling of insecurity amidst growing tensions between the two countries. The ICC clarified that everything would be carried out according to schedule and clearly stated that Bangladesh matches will be held in India.
