Washington Sundar’s race against time continues, last chance before T20 World Cup 2026 or squad change for India?

Preparations for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February are in full swing for the Indian team, but injuries to some key players have raised concerns for the team management. The situation is particularly unclear in the all-rounder department. While India is currently playing a series against New Zealand, a warm-up match against South Africa is also scheduled for February 4 in Navi Mumbai.

Relief regarding Tilak Varma’s fitness

Middle-order batsman Tilak Varma is on track to be fully fit before the World Cup. He is expected to join the Indian team in Mumbai on February 3, just before the warm-up match. He was replaced by Shreyas Iyer in the initial matches of the T20 series against New Zealand due to injury.

The possibility of an early return remains

If he receives timely clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, Tilak Varma could even return to the team before the final T20 match. The team management is constantly monitoring his progress.

Washington Sundar’s injury remains the biggest concern

All-rounder Washington Sundar’s recovery from a side strain is progressing more slowly than expected. He is currently considered doubtful for the T20 World Cup. This presents a significant challenge for the selectors, as Sundar plays a crucial role in the team’s balance.

Riyan Parag emerges as a strong backup option

If Sundar is unable to recover in time, Riyan Parag is the frontrunner to replace him. Parag, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, is in the final stages of rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence. He recently passed the Yo-Yo test and will soon participate in simulation matches.

Selectors await the final decision

Parag has played nine T20s and one ODI for India so far. While his recent domestic cricket performance hasn’t been exceptional, his off-spin bowling and batting abilities make him a useful option. The coming week will be crucial—if Sundar is not fit, Parag could join the team in Navi Mumbai on February 3.

Warm-up match against South Africa will be crucial

India and South Africa will play a warm-up match in Mumbai on February 4. This match will be the last opportunity to test the players’ fitness and team combination before the T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7.
