Who is Jacob Martin? Ex-India cricketer arrested for alleged drunk driving


Former India cricketer Jacob Martin has been arrested on Monday, January 27 for reportedly crashing his luxury SUV into three parked vehicles while he was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol as mentioned by the police officials.

Ex-India cricketer gets arrested

The incident took place near Punit Nagar Society in the early hours of Akota area in Baroda. According to the Akota Police Station, Martin lost control over his car – MG Hector and collided it with three parked vehicles which were outside his residence causing a lot of damage. A complaint was filed by the owners of the damaged vehicles and authorities registered a case against the former India cricketer under the section of BNS law that covers reckless and intoxicated driving.

Who is Jacob Martin?

Born on May 11, 1972, Jacob Martin is a former Baroda batter who has also captained the Baroda Ranji Trophy team. This is not the first time he has been in trouble, earlier in 2022 he was detained by the Delhi Police in connection with a human trafficking case, making this the second time the former cricketer has been in legal trouble.

Martin has played for India in 10 ODIs and has scored 158 runs with an average of 22.57 and a strike rate of 47.73. In First Class cricket, Martin has played 138 matches in which he has scored 9192 runs with an average of 46.65 – this includes 23 centuries and 47 fifties. In List A, he has played 101 matches in which he has 2948 runs – this includes three centuries and 20 fifties.

Investigation continues in drunk driving case

After the complaint was filed under his name, Martin was taken into custody for few hours and the police are still investigating on the matter which has drawn significant attention. The Baroda Cricket Association has still not issued any statement regarding the issue. Meanwhile, the authorities are urging public to exercise caution and avoid drinking and driving.
