The US Department of Justice (DOJ) plans to ask an appellate court to order Alphabet’s Google to sell its Chrome browser, reported ‘Bloomberg’ News citing sources. According to Bloomberg, the DOJ will request the judge to impose additional remedies, including curbs on Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) and Android operations, following the August ruling by the same judge that Google illegally monopolised the search market.
Google is facing another challenge in its ongoing antitrust battle after a U.S. judge ruled in August that the tech giant illegally maintained its dominance in the search market. The DOJ is encouraging a “radical agenda that goes far beyond the legal issues in this case,” and would harm consumers, said Lee-Anne Mulholland, vice president, Google Regulatory Affairs as reported by Bloomberg.
Mulholland said, “the Justice Department continues to push a radical agenda that goes far beyond the legal issues in this case.” She further said, “the government putting its thumb on the scale in these ways would harm consumers, developers and American technological leadership at precisely the moment it is most needed,” reported NDTV.
What Next For Google Chrome?
Following the August ruling that Google illegally monopolized search, the Department of Justice will request the same judge to impose additional restrictions on Google’s artificial intelligence and Android smartphone operating system. The U.S. Department of Justice is planning to ask Judge Amit Mehta to order Google to divest its Chrome browser.
The court is gearing up to tackle Google’s antitrust case, with a final decision expected by August 2025. Authorities may reassess the need for Google to sell off Chrome if the company implements specific improvements and makes the search engine market more competitive, according to Bloomberg.
The 2020 Google search lawsuit marked a landmark moment, the first time in decades the US government accused a major corporation of illegal monopolisation.
