PM Modi Hugs Zelenskyy At G7 Summit 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the 2024 G7 summit after meeting his British counterpart Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting is important because Zelensky pushed India to join the upcoming Swiss peace conference to stop Russian aggression.

Zelensky briefed Prime Minister Modi on various aspects of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The two leaders met at the previous G7 summit in Hiroshima in May last year. Prime Minister Modi said India wants to strengthen bilateral ties with Ukraine after a “productive” meeting with Zelensky.

India has consistently advocated that the best way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine is through dialogue and diplomacy. Zelenskyy has repeatedly pressed Prime Minister Modi to attend the peace summit, but Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra did not specify whether the Indian prime minister would attend. In fact, in a recent press conference, an Indian diplomat said, “Please please share information (about the Prime Minister’s participation in the peace summit).

Called the G7 summit, the group of seven began Thursday with host Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, world leader US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and others at the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was invited by his Italian counterpart Meloni to the grand event, arrived on Friday morning with a high-level delegation. It was PM Modi’s first foreign trip in his “historic” third term.
