In a significant development, the United States held expert-level discussions with delegations from both Russia and Ukraine. The discussions were held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from March 23 to 25. According to the White House press release, these bilateral meetings followed high-level discussions by United States President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The conversation again established Washington’s continued diplomatic engagement in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. It also underscored commitment of United States to bring regional stability.
Maritime Security Deal Locked
The talks between delegation focused on security in the Black Sea, safeguarding commercial maritime activity, energy infrastructure protection, and broader diplomatic efforts to foster a durable peace. The US and Russia have reached agreements on multiple fronts. Maritime security was particularly focused during the discussions. Both the countries have committed to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea. Along with it, they agreed to eliminate the use of force in maritime operations and prevent militarisation of commercial vessels.
What’s In Store For Russia?
The United States have further agreed to assist Russia in restoring its access to global markets for fertiliser and agricultural exports. The United States said, “Will help restore Russia’s access to the world market for agricultural and fertiliser exports, lower maritime insurance costs, and enhance access to ports and payment systems for such transactions.” This is what Puitn is going to get from agreeing to maritime security deal in the Black Sea.
What Is Ukraine Getting?
Similar set of agreements on maritime security and Black Sea was reached during parallel discussions with the Ukrainian delegation. Ukraine and the US committed to prevent commercial vessels from being used for military operations. They pledged to ensure safe passage for maritime trade. The US said, “The United States remains committed to helping achieve the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of forcibly transferred Ukrainian children.”
Will It Bring Regional Stability?
Additionally, Zelenskyy and Trump’s earlier agreement to ban attacks on energy infrastructure in both Russia and Ukraine was also discussed. Steps to implement the agreement were outlined.
The negotiations between all three nations, reaffirmed the shared objective of working towards long-term stability in the region. Furthermore, the agreement on Maritime Security and negotiations on Black Sea by the Ukraine and Russia show their willingness to achieve regional security. United States President Trump continues to bridge gab between both the countries through his efforts. Maritime security on Black sea will benefit countries and promote global economic stability.
