Man with Bengal Police ‘sticker’ on car poses as IAS officer, arrested

A 61-year-old man has been arrested for impersonating an IAS officer and duping a woman in Kolkata. The accused, identified as Shanto Kumar Mitra, duped a woman and her daughter of Rs 11.8 lakh promising to allot two government flats at Rajarhat Megacity under VVIP Quota and also arrange a foreign liquor license.

A complaint was lodged by a woman, identified as Manju Ghosh in December last year. The woman in her complaint said that she and her daughter paid Rs 11.76 lakh to the ‘fake’ IAS officer but he neither fulfilled any of the commitments nor refunded the entire amount.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the man from a hotel in Bartala where he had been hiding for a year. Some incriminating documents were found from his hotel room, police said.

His i20 car, parked in front of the hotel, had stickers of Nabanna, Writer’s Building, Raj Bhawan, Kolkata Police, West Bengal Police on it, which was also seized.

Police said the man was actually a resident of Beleghata but sometimes used to stay in Haridevpur area too.
