Kanpur bank locker theft: Cops arrest man, valuables recovered
The Kanpur Police on Thursday revealed that one person has been arrested in the locker case of Bank of Baroda Kidwai Nagar in which theft of Rs 1.5 crore worth of jewellery was made. Along with this, half of the jewellery stolen from the locker was also recovered.
The theft came to the fore on Monday when a customer visited the branch to check the locker and found it empty.
The arrested person, identified as Rohit Shukla, was an employee of a company who was assigned the job of locker repair and maintenance, said police.
On March 24, one of the bank’s customers, Rama Awasthi, was shocked when she went to check her locker. The locker was opened without the key and jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore kept in it was missing.
After the complaint, a detailed investigation was launched into the matter and a special team was formed to nab the accused.
Sources told India Today that the police went through the CCTV footage of last 18 months, after which the activities of a certain individual seemed suspicious to them.
After the accused was arrested, he accepted the fact he used to steal things from lockers in lieu of repairing them and keep the stuff in his bag, as no one suspected him.
It has also been found in the investigation that the miscreant had stolen the jewellery by cutting the locker in 2021 itself.
